Asarco Stack - Ruston, WA Fall of 1991??

This was pretty cool. Asarco was a copper smelting plant from the early 1900's to the 1980's. The site is now one of the top 10 superfund sites in the United States. This particular Fall afternoon they blew up the stack. If you've never seen demolition like this before, it's amazing . . . except for the power lines in the foreground, I'm pretty pleased with these photos.

I'm thinking of making an animated GIF out of these . . . that could be kinda cool . . .

Stack Before

As it had stood for decades

First Blast

No, I wasn't wiggling the camera, this was the first blast. The whole stack vibrates

Bands pop

The bands that you see popping away from the stack had to be blown off first before they could bring the stack down

Bands start to fall

The bands are clear and falling

Starts to Fall

Notice the dust at the top of the picture, the stack is starting to fall

Falling

Further

Starts to break up

Notice the break forming in the middle of the stack

Really Falling Now

Look at her go!!

Almost Gone

Almost done now

Stack of Dust

Just a stack of dust now . . .

All gone

GONE!!
