P90X Lean – Day 3 – Shoulders & Arms and Ab Ripper X

Let me start off by saying that I do NOT intend to post every day for all 90 days, but I do want to give my initial impressions of each workout in the series. So far day one, Core Synergistics was the hardest for me. Today was a lot of resistance work with weights (or bands). I’m glad I opted to buy some dumbells, and am actually looking forward to when I need to buy heavier ones. I’m sure I would have survived with the bands, but I’m enjoying the dumbells for now. For point of reference, I bought a set each of 5, 10, 15 and 20 lb dumbells. Today’s workout was tough no doubt, but I’m pretty sure I pussed out a bit on the weight. Just getting used to the variety of moves is hard enough, so I’m glad I didn’t struggle too much with the weight. I mostly used 10 pound dumbells, with a couple only using the 5’s. I used the end of my bed for a chair, while not ideal, it worked for the two exercises requiring a chair. NOTE, I DO hav a footboard at the end of my bed, I was not using the squishy mattress… Don’t do that, I think you could hurt yourself using an unstable surface like a mattress.

Now when the 60 minutes of Arms & Shoulders are over they move right into Ab Ripper X, which is 16 minutes of pure hell. Mostly because I think someone forgot to give me any abdominal muscles whatsoever… I’m serious, I have never in my life been able to do a sit up. When I say that I mean the kind where you lay on the floor, knees bent (not under anything for leverage) and just sit up. I can get my back about 3 inches off the floor and that’s where it ends for me. Always has and this is probably the NUMBER ONE thing I’d like to resolve while doing P90X. I don’t have any delusions that I’ll ever have a six or eight pack, but I would like to be able to do even half of the exercises on this DVD. I get to do Ab Ripper X twice a week, so with any luck I’ll see some improvement.

Tomorrow is my first mental test. I have been getting up and going right into my workout. But tomorrow I have a doctors appointment at 6:40 in Auburn, so unless I get up at 3:30-3:45 to workout, I won’t get it done before leaving for the docs office. So the PLAN is to come home immediately after my appt and do Yoga X. For 90 minutes. This is where normally I’d just say “eh, no biggie, I’ve worked out 3 days already, I can miss one day” (It’s just one tiny wafer thin mint sir!) for me to delay going to work until probably 10AM will be brutal. My phone usually starts ringing around 8:30. But I started P90X with one goal in mind, do something good for ME. So wish me luck. This is gonna be a real torture test for me mentally tomorrow. Maybe I’ll just go to the docs office in my workout clothes so I HAVE to come home to at least change. Oh the other part that is going to be tough for me is that I hate Yoga… So to plan to do it for 90 minutes each week…. Well that makes this the easiest workout for me to just say “screw it!”
